Torquay faces Cheltenham on Thursday night in the second leg of the semi-final in the English League 2 play-offs. Cheltenham won the first leg 2:0 on Sunday and are the clear favourite for a place in the final against Crewe or Southend.

Torquay had hopes for direct promotion until the last day of the regular season, but finished fifth with 81 points – one place higher than their opponents in this tie. The southerners were very stable hosts all season long. They managed to win 12, drew eight and lost only three of their 23 games at Plainmoor Stadium. However, Torquay failed to win the last two matches on home ground in the league. The team of Martin Ling is in a streak of six games without a victory in all competitions. Last year Torquay reached the final of the play-offs, but lost 1:0 to Stevenage.

The Robins qualified for the play-offs for the first time since their relegation from League 1 three years ago. This is the second participation of Cheltenham in the play-offs for League 1 in the club history. They managed to win the first one in 2006. Cheltenham occupied the sixth place in the overall standings in League 2 with 77 points, gathered from 23 wins, 8 draws and 15 defeats. The team showed some great away performances this season, winning 10, drawing 3 and losing 10 games far from home. The victory against Plymouth in the last day of the season put an end of the series of four away losses for Cheltenham.

Torquay will try to qualify for the final for second time in a row, but the advantage of Cheltenham is too big for a game between so evenly matched sides.

Hercules and Numancia meet in Alicante on Wednesday in a tie from the 39th round of Liga Adelante, the second tier in Spanish football.

The hosts will most likely have to take part in the play-offs for the last place in Primera. Hercules currently occupies the fourth place in the table with 65 points. Direct promotion is seven points away and, given the form of contenders Celta and Valladolid, chances are purely theoretical. On the other hand, Hercules has pretty much secured its place in the play-offs – the advantage over Almeria on the seventh place is also seven points. The team from Alicante is among the strongest visitors in the league, but shows hesitations at home – 11 victories, two draws and six defeats at own ground this season. Hercules is in a streak of six league games without a loss and is undefeated at home the last three times.

For Numancia the season is already over – they can only try to climb a few places up from the current 11th spot, but this will not be enough to reach the play-offs. The team fro Soria has 48 points, accumulated from 12 wins, 12 draws and 13 losses. Numancia relies entirely on home ground – the visitors are one of the weakest away teams in the league. In 18 games far from home they have only one victory (less than any other team in Segunda), eight draws and nine defeats. The guests are without away win in 11 consecutive games since December and are in a series of four league defeats in a row.

Both teams don’t have much to play for, but Hercules will probably materialize the home advantage.

The last member of the Bundesliga for the season 2012/2013 will be decided on Tuesday night at Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf. Local Fortuna awaits Hertha Berlin with a goal advantage from the first leg (2:1 in Berlin).

Fortuna Dusseldorf enters the game as a clear favourite. The Reds dominated during most of the first match and won deservedly. Fortuna is renowned for its home strength in 2.Bundesliga – the home side won 11, drew five and lost only one game at own ground. The team of Norbert Meier is undefeated in eight consecutive matches at home. The hero from the first leg, Thomas Broeker, will be supported in attack by youngster Maximilian Beister, while the top scorer Sascha Roesler will sit on the bench. The only injured player is reserve goalkeeper Robert Almer.

Last year Hertha won both games against their current opponents in 2.Bundesliga – 4:2 in Berlin and 2:1 at Esprit Arena. This season however, out of 17 away Bundesliga games, Hertha won only three, drew seven and lost seven, conceding 35 goals. The team of Otto Rehhagel managed to win only once in its last eleven away appearances. The young top goalscorer of the team Lasogga is injured and will be replaced again by Adrian Ramos, who scored an own goal in Berlin. The other missing players are the injured defenders Franz and Lustenberger, as well as Ottl and Torun.

Hertha Berlin will do everything possible to keep their place in the top flight, but Fortuna has the resources to get at least a draw at home and return in the Bundesliga after 15 years of absence.
