The first official match for Gladbach will be against Kaiserslautern in their match of the 1/32 finals of the national cup. The upcoming opponents have not met for nine years, when Kaiserslautern’s last stay was in Bundesliga. In the 2011/12 season, the two teams played two matches against each other, both of which were won by Borussia. This season, the Red and Whites finished last in the standings, and the Black and Whites finished fourth.
Kaiserslautern’s hopes to return at least to the Second Bundesliga this season are unlikely to come true. In 2020/21, the players in red and white finished in the bottom half of the standings. The German Cup will be the only tournament in which the Gladbach team will compete. They failed to qualify for the top seven last season in the Bundesliga and will not play in European tournaments.
In the last edition of the German Cup, Gladbach reached the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund. Now they are starting their participation against an opponent who is from the third level and we expect them not to have difficulties to overcome it.
